Earlier today, November 10, Oracle has announced the release of a new maintenance version for its powerful, cross-platform, and open-source VirtualBox 5 virtualization software for all supported operating systems, including GNU/Linux, Microsoft Windows, and Mac OS X.

According to the release notes, attached at the end of the article for reference, Oracle VirtualBox 5.0.10 adds a great number of changes, which means that it's a worthy update for all users of VirtualBox 5.0.8 or previous versions. Among the improvements, we can mention better support for various Intel Atom CPUs, initial support for the recently released X.Org Server 1.18 display server, and many fixes for the xHCI controller.

The system register emulation has been fixed, the "immediate screenshot" issue has been addressed, a problem with the 3D overlay window reparenting has also been patched, a bug in the help index has been resolved. Moreover, AC97 audio streams are now being properly reset, and a crash that occurred under certain conditions on GNU/Linux hosts powered by a Linux kernel older than version 3.3 has been fixed.

Lots of Windows changes, a single Mac OS X fix

VirtualBox 5.0.10 also contains specific fixes for the Microsoft Windows platform, among which we can mention support for allowing the use shared folder paths that contain an extended-length path prefix and VRDP external authentication improvements. Also important are a patch for a crash the occurred when the Netfilter host driver was used under certain conditions and a couple of Windows host installer fixes.

For the Mac OS X platform, VirtualBox 5.0.10 brings support for using the right kernel on specific hosts. Among other noteworthy changes, we can mention TCP support in the DNS proxy, improvements to the identification of various USB devices, and better webcam support on the Windows platform.
