Vector Light Linux, a distribution based on Slackware that uses the IceWM window manager by default, has been released and is now available for download.

The Slackware-based Vector Linux has numerous flavors, and this is the update for just one of them. In fact, the release of the standard edition happened a month ago. The Light version is a little bit different from that one. It's aimed at users with lower hardware specs, and it's a little bit smaller than the regular version. It also comes with a replacement solution for the Xfce desktop, the IceWM, window manager.

It's also worth pointing out that Slackware is not exactly the most popular solution to base your operating system. It was a time when many more Slackware offshoots were available, but you can now count all the distros using this OS as a base.

Vector Light Linux 7.1 is ready for download

We covered the launch of the Standard edition of Vector Linux when it happened a month ago, and the Light edition is pretty much the same, with the exception of the desktop being used.

"The 'lightness' of this version is relative to our Standard version and is achieved by using the lightweight IceWM window manager in place of the XFCE desktop environment. You may also choose barebone X-windows with just TWM. Otherwise, the base system and installation experience is the same as Standard. IceWM is old school. It uses a manual approach, much like a stick shift instead of an automatic transmission. It doesn't change unless you tell it to. Configuration is managed by editing plain text files. To make things easier and get you started, some of the most common tweaks are also scripted and controllable by a GUI app," reads the official announcement.

You can download Vector Light Linux 7.1 right now from Softpedia. Please keep in mind that you need to install it in order to test it.
