14 DAY TRIAL // Canonical's Łukasz Zemczak has just sent his daily report on the work done by the Ubuntu Touch developers in preparation for the soon-to-be-released OTA-8 software update for Ubuntu Phones, as well as some early details about the next major update, OTA-9.
According to Mr. Zemczak, the validation of the Ubuntu Touch OTA-8 update is almost done, as the remaining issues that didn't allow the team to generate the Release Candidate images and start the QA testing also landed at the end of last week. However, they have also managed to quickly fix a recently discovered bug in the Camera app.
Therefore, the final Release Candidate images of the Ubuntu Touch OTA-8 software update have been regenerated and sent to BQ for validation, which means that all Ubuntu Phones users should receive the OTA-8 update in the next few days. An official release was initially planned for November 18, 2015.
"An image has been re-spinned, tagged and will now be passed over to BQ for validation," says Łukasz Zemczak. "So far it seems we still might make it in time for the release, maybe up to one day of delay. Expect the new update on your phones in around 2-3 days."
OTA-9 features are landing now
On the other hand, the Ubuntu Touch developers are already working on implementing new features and fixing bugs for the next major update, the OTA-9. As such, they have already managed to land a new Web Browser app, as well as to update the touch seeds with support for Thai fonts.
Lastly, the team has fixed the devel-proposed images, which are now working as expected, along with a patch for some image build failure issues. The Ubuntu Touch developers will soon start preparing for migrating the mobile operating system to the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) branch.
