OTA-9 release schedule has been published

Just a few minutes ago, Canonical's Łukasz Zemczak sent an email to the Ubuntu Touch mailing list to inform developers and Ubuntu Phone users alike about the release schedule of the next major update of the Ubuntu for phones mobile OS.

According to Mr. Zemczak, now that the Ubuntu Touch developers have wrapped up the OTA-8 software update, which is planned for release on November 18 (it might suffer a one-day delay, though), the time has come for them to announce the official dates of the OTA-9 update.

Therefore, we have the pleasure of informing our readers today that the Ubuntu Touch OTA-9 software update will arrive not as expected, but on January 20, 2016. Other important dates in the OTA-9 release schedule are the String and Feature Freeze for January 5 and the Final Freeze for January 8, 2016.

"As you can see there's quite some time till the next full OTA - the main reason is the holiday season around the end of year," said Łukasz Zemczak. "No worries though as we are considering preparing a hotfix OTA before that for the most irritating issues. More on that soon."

OTA-8 to get a hotfix update

In the hopes that this doesn't come as too much of a disappointment for owners of Ubuntu Phones, who expected to get one more OTA update just in time for the holidays season, the Ubuntu Touch developers are planning to offer a hotfix OTA update that patches some of those annoying issues reported since the release of OTA-8.

In the meantime, Mr. Zemczak sent his daily report to inform us all that the Ubuntu Touch OTA-8 software update is still in testing, and we should hear more about the results tomorrow. OTA-8 will be published for all supported devices at the same time, but in phases, during a 24-hour period.
