Users request more and more features for Xenial Xerus

While digging through the Internet, we've stumbled on two user requests for the addition of new features for the upcoming Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) computer operating system from Canonical.

In the first request, users are asking Ubuntu developers if the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) operating system will provide them with firmware updates through the fwupd utility since Canonical already plans on dropping the Ubuntu Software Center in favor of GNOME Software as the default package manager for the distribution.

"Since GNOME Software is coming to Xenial, are there any plans to support firmware updates through fwupd + GNOME Software?" asked Amr Ibrahim on Ubuntu's mailing list. The answer came quick from Ubuntu developer Bryan Quigley, who said, "I believe it was discussed at the last summit and if everything lands - fwupd and gnome-software - it should theoretically "just work"."

The PHP stack might be updated to PHP 7

On the other hand, an older request is still pending on the Launchpad website, where users have proposed the upgrade of the PHP stack in Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) from PHP 5 to the revolutionary PHP 7 branch, which might go a long way towards helping more users move to PHP 7.

"PHP7 is a revolution. I want to propose to create like two branches, PHP5 packages a PHP7 packages, like Python (python3 and python)," says user vinc-q on the Launchpad proposal, which Canonical employees marked as "Triaged" while also assigning the "Wishlist" tag to its importance.

It remains to be seen if these new features will be implemented by Canonical in the upcoming Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) operating system, which has just received a first Alpha build for opt-in flavors. However, being an LTS (Long-Term Support) release, Canonical might think twice before implementing new, bleeding-edge open source and GNU/Linux technologies.
