14 DAY TRIAL // Canonical's Joseph Salisbury has reported today, September 8, the summary of the Ubuntu Kernel Team's meeting that took place earlier on the official IRC channel of the project.
The big news we want to share with you today is that the master branch of the Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) operating system has been rebased to Linux kernel 4.2. The packages have been uploaded to the official software repositories of the OS.
We've downloaded the latest daily build images of Ubuntu 15.10, and we can confirm (see the screenshot attached to the right) that its kernel packages are now at version 4.2.0-7.7, based on the upstream Linux kernel 4.2.0 sources.
From now on, the Ubuntu Kernel Team will concentrate their efforts on providing Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) users with regular kernel updates, as soon as maintenance releases for Linux kernel 4.2 become available online.
"We have rebased our Wily master branch to a 4.2 based kernel and have uploaded to the archive, i.e., 4.2.0-7.7. We will continue to track 4.2 for the remainder of the 15.10 cycle," says Joseph Salisbury.
Ubuntu 15.10 will be released on October 22
As you might know, Ubuntu 15.10 Desktop and Server editions are currently under development. The Final Beta build will become available for anyone who wants to take the forthcoming OS for a test drive later this month, on September 24.
The final release of Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) will be unleashed worldwide on October 22, 2015, along with all of its official flavors, including Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Ubuntu MATE, Ubuntu Kylin, Ubuntu Studio, and Ubuntu GNOME.
All of these Ubuntu editions and many others will be powered by the latest, greatest, and most advanced Linux 4.2 kernel. This is also the first release of Ubuntu that includes kernel packages based on the current stable Linux kernel.
