14 DAY TRIAL // Apple might have some ideas about developing and distributing its own line of wireless headphones if the trademark discovered by MacRumors is indeed filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office by an Apple shell company.
The trademark with the 86764566 serial number was filed on September 22, 2015, and according to some rumors the company behind this filing might actually be used by Apple to hide its identity, as it already did in other cases in the past.
Even though the AirPods trademark does not contain any drawing with representations of the device that would wear this moniker, it is still safe to assume that it will indeed be used for some type of headphones given that the Identification row in the "Goods and/or services and basis information" part of the filing says that the trademark will be used for "audio components and accessories."
Although Apple now owns and markets the Beats Powerbeats 2 wireless in-ear headphones, creating its own line of wireless earphones would be logical seeing that the ones designed by Beats don't actually match Apple's line of wearable devices.
The signs hinting at Apple being behind the AirPods trademark are still very few and quite flimsy
MacRumors believes that Entertainment in Flight LLC is an Apple shell company because it uses a Gmail e-mail address as the contact information, because it had filed no other prior patents or trademarks with the United States Patent and Trademark Office before the AirPods trademark, and because it cited a trademark application in Jamaica filed in March as a priority date.
On the whole, even though the evidence backing the rumor that Apple is indeed the one behind the AirPods trademark are quite thin, it still makes sense since the Cupertino tech company already sells a line of headphones, named EarPods.
Taking this into consideration, Apple jumping from EarPods to AirPods when naming a new line of wireless headphones would not be so far-fetched.
