File Explorer is yet to get major improvements in Windows 10

“Windows 10 is never done,” Microsoft has said on several occasions, but the version that was launched on July 29 and that pretty much everyone refers to as “the final version” lacks several user-requested features, including one that many of us expected to arrive by this time.

File Explorer, Microsoft’s integrated file manager, has received only small improvements in Windows 10, and although there’s indeed a chance to see new features added in future updates, tab support is still missing, despite the fact that thousands of users have requested it as part of the Windows Insider program.

A powerful file manager is what Windows needs to make working with files truly simple, but for the moment, third-party software solutions are what you need to turn to because Microsoft decided to keep File Explorer rather unchanged in Windows 10.

The tab support would enable users to work with multiple folders and files at the same time, making every single task a lot faster and easier. The majority of third-party file managers offer such options, so it’s easy to see why so many users give up on File Explorer.

Nearly 32,000 votes

At this point, a user request posted on UserVoice and asking for tab support in File Explorer has nearly 32,000 votes, which makes many wonder why exactly Microsoft is ignoring these suggestions and keeping the built-in File Manager a rather basic app.

“Please add tabs to Windows Explorer/File Explorer. Every other OS has this feature and Windows is severely lagging behind. QTTabBar is the best implementation, however a user should be able to view two tabs side by side within the one single Explorer Window pane,” the user request reads.

Obviously, Microsoft won’t say whether it plans to introduce tabs in a future update, but if the number of votes in this regard keeps increasing, expect the company to consider this new feature sometime soon.
