The S40 is not very impressive spec-wise

In between the OnePlus 2 and Motorola’s new Moto X and Moto G announcements, another smartphone manufacturer has rolled out a new device into the wild.

We’re referring to rugged mobile maker CAT, which has just lifted the veil off the S40, a device meant to cater to the needs of professionals working in risky, outdoor environments.

The CAT (Caterpillar) S40 arrives with a 4.7-inch IPS display with qHD resolution (540 x 960) with Corning Gorilla Glass 4 on top for protection. The smartphone utilizes a Snapdragon 210 processor clocked at 1.1GHz in order to keep things alive together with 1GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage (there’s also a microSD card slot for memory expansion).

CAT also throws in an 8MP/2MP camera combo plus a 3,000 mAh non-removable battery. As you can see, the specs aren’t exactly that great, but people looking to purchase high-end phones such as these aren’t really interested in having super fancy features on board. They’re looking for something to get the job done.

The CAT S40 runs the latest Android (5.1) software

Since the CAT S40 is a rugged phone, it comes with IP68 certification and wet-finger tracking technology. Users can even access the device while wearing gloves.

It has also been equipped with a super bright display which is essential for those looking outdoors in direct sunlight.

The rugged handset has been made to be water/dustproof (up to 1.8 m), but also shockproof. It offers a large battery that allows owners to take advantage of 18 hours of talk time. Quite amazingly, the phone can go for 39 days in standby mode without needing to be charged.

The CAT S40 offers full access to the Google Play Store, but on top of that, it will also come equipped with its own dedicated app store which will highlight the apps necessary to make your rugged phone experience simply the best.

If the CAT S40 sounds good to you, you should know that the phone is not exactly the cheapest out there, as it will sell for $399 / €439 and will be made available in 60 countries on August 1. CAT will offer a range of rugged accessories for it, too.
