Users have been asked to report everything abnormal

Reports about Telegram being used by the ISIS sympathizers and terrorists have been floating around for a few days now, so the makers of this really popular messaging app have decided to intervene.

After the Paris attacks and all the discussions about the Anonymous offensive, people have started to look for any software solution that terrorists might use to safely communicate, or at least where ISIS sympathizers might find shelter. It didn't take long until Telegram became the subject.

Telegram is not a small messaging app. It's actually one of the biggest out there, and they pride themselves on one thing above all. The say that users get the privacy they want, and that would be fine in a normal world, but this feature is also being abused by people with all the wrong intentions.

Telegram doesn't have a choice

Telegram owners did the only thing they could. They are now going through channels, closing them if they are being used by ISIS to spread propaganda.

The situation is bad enough that Telegram users received a message today straight from the source.

“We were disturbed to learn that Telegram’s public channels were being used by ISIS to spread their propaganda. We are carefully reviewing all reports sent to us at [email protected] and are taking appropriate action to block such channels. As a result, this week alone we blocked 78 ISIS-related channels across 12 languages.”

This means that it's open season for reports on Telegram and that anyone who sees this kind of activity should report it immediately.

Telegram may pride itself on the privacy it provides, but the users of the application must also play a part. This is likely just a first step for Telegram and we should expect to see more action from the Russian company soon.
