The first point release for Solus has arrived

Solus has just received its first point release in the new "Shannon" series, and the new version is now available for download and your enjoyment.

Not a lot has changed in the past few days since the previous weekly update for Solus, but from the looks of it, developers have managed to close most of the bugs, making the operating system a much more stable and interesting release.

The Solus team announced the release schedule for their operating system, and they are a little behind, but things seem to be back on track. In fact, the devs could have pushed this new version out the door a few days ago, but they were waiting for the new OpenSSL update. Right after it was released, the new Solus 1.1 was respun.

Solus 1.1 is a massive upgrade

When the team promised some big changes for the 1.1 version, they weren't kidding. This is a massive update, and it's really difficult to list all of the modifications and improvements, but here is a rundown of the most important stuff.

"We are proud to announce the release of Solus 1.1, the first point release in the Shannon series of releases. Solus 1.1 builds upon the groundwork of 1.0 with subtle refinements and improvements to Budgie, large core and graphics stack improvements, and furthers us on our journey to create something that you can just use, something that just works," developer Josh Strobl explained in the announcement.

First of all, the Budgie desktop environment has been upgraded to version 10.2.4, which solves some issues with icons, network, and rendering. The most important change is definitely the move from GDM to LightDM.

Also, a number of hardware optimizations have been made, which means that components like Mesa, Xorg, X11 driver, and Nouveau drivers have been upgraded as well. Preliminary OpenGL 4.1 support is provided as well.

The Solus team also added some much-needed printing support with the implementation of HP Linux Imaging and Printing (HPLIP), the installer has been improved as well with support for timezone configuration, better detection of EFI System Partitions, and much more.

As you would expect, many of the packages have been upgraded, but they are way too many to list here. Stuff like Firefox, Nautilus, Thunderbird, VLC, and many others are now at the latest stable version available.

You can now download Solus 1.1 from Softpedia and give it a spin, or you can upgrade your system if you already have Solus installed.
