Josh Strobl from the Solus Project has had the enormous pleasure of informing the world about the official release date for the Solus 1.0 Linux kernel-based computer operating system, which is December 25, 2015.

The development of Solus 1.0 started at the end of 2014, when the first Alpha builds were being distributed to a limited number of people for testing purposes, under the name of Evolve OS. A year has passed, and Solus 1.0 will finally see the light of day after three Beta builds and a Release Candidate (RC) version.

Solus 1.0 will include a huge number of improvements and new features, among which we can mention support for the open-source AMDGPU video driver for AMD Radeon graphics cards, and Skylake enabled in the latest Linux 4.3 kernel. Moreover, there will be the fully customizable Budgie Next desktop environment, support for legacy Nvidia video drivers, along with the latest Nouveau and Intel graphics drivers.

"Budgie Next has undergone a lot of work this week. We now require our own theme to completely override many elements, which enables a consistent Budgie experience. This will be expanded on in the future, as we will enable users to choose their own custom themes for use with Budgie," says Josh Strobl in the latest Solus newsletter.

Budgie Rewrite replaces Budgie

The next-generation Budgie desktop environment will be the most attractive part of the Solus 1.0 operating system, featuring accessibility improvements, native support for HighConstrast, as well as many customization enhancements, so no Solus user will have the same interface.

Other changes in Solus 1.0 include the replacement of the syntaptics driver, as well as the evdev input drivers with the libinput X.Org driver replacing syntaptics, support for ripping Audio-CDs, printing support, and gaming support via Steam for Linux. Of course, the latest software packages will also be present in Solus 1.0.
