14 DAY TRIAL // Consoles are usually constrained regarding the amount of internal storage they can usually fit inside. Both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One come with limited storage hard disks drives that hold an unimpressive amount of storage space by today's standards.
However, Sony's PlayStation, unlike Microsoft's Xbox One, does give users the opportunity to upgrade their internal HDDs not only regarding the amount of storage space the new drives can carry but also their overall performance. In this regard, Seagate Technology paired up with Sony to offer PlayStation users new solid-state hybrid drives for such systems.
The new Seagate Game Drive for PlayStation is an SSHD that upgrades the internal 500GB hard disk drive found in your factory default Sony console to 1TB capacity and 8GB NAND flash cache designed to speed up launch of frequently used applications.
To speed up booting applications, the SSHD automatically learns which sectors of the drive are accessed regularly and places them into the NAND flash cache, enabling faster system boot and game loading via a technology called Adaptive Memory. Interestingly enough, the drive can also be retrofitted on PlayStation 3.
More space is now available for PlayStation from Seagate
Although SSHDs from Seagate aren't a new thing, since they are quite common on the PC market and can offer quite an affordable, and effective, alternative to all HDDs out there, the new Game Drive from Seagate is an offer specifically created for Sony's PlayStation consoles.
However, it's worth mentioning that Seagate also sells GameDrives for Xbox One, but unlike the SATA fitted GameDrives for PlayStation, the Xbox One-specified are externally connected via USB 3.0 cable providing less transfer speed but they come at twice the capacity of 2TB of storage space.
It's unknown why Seagate decided to limit the storage space available for PlayStation, but it's worth mentioning that the Xbox version isn't an SSHD but only a plain HDD. This way Seagate decided to maintain a price/performance compromise in order to keep both consoles competitive in what accessories they offer.
The new Seagate Game Drive for PlayStation comes at around $100 (€90) and is available in stores today.
