The developers of the Rygel open-source media server software announced a few hours ago the release of the second development snapshot towards the next stable branch, Rygel 0.30.

Rygel 0.28 is currently the stable branch of the project, distributed as part of the GNOME 3.18 Stack, but the developers behind the free media server software are working hard these days on Rygel 0.30, which is developed under the 0.29.x unstable series and will be distributed as part of the upcoming GNOME 3.20 desktop environment.

As usual, we've managed to get our hands on the internal changelog so that we can share with our readers what's new in this release. Therefore, Rygel 0.29.2 adds the ability to re-bind a Cursor, supports GObject-style construction for the Database, addresses an issue with the thumbnails for various Samsung TVs, and hides engine-internal URIs.

Furthermore, indent request headers are now provided in the server component for better readability, a Range header issue related to resources with unknown length has been fixed, the MIME's extension mapping has seen some improvements as well, and an explicit check has been added for @restricted.

DLNA profiles can now be correctly set up

In addition to the changes mentioned above, Rygel 0.29.2 adds better support for setting up a DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) profile on Gst-Launch, correctly removes empty and broken cached DVD files, and skips the attached DVD device if the lsdvd utility is not present instead of blacklisting it.

For the GStreamer media engine support, the unstable Rygel 0.29.2 release fixes serving of resources with unspecified length. Moreover, custom database functions have been replaced with various implementations from Rygel.Database, a couple of minor bugs have been fixed, and the Spanish, Latvian, Polish, and Slovak translations updated.

Download the Rygel 0.29.2 sources right now from our website if you want to compile the software and take it for a test drive. However, please try to keep in mind that this is a pre-release version, so some of the functionality might not work as expected. Wait for the final Rygel 0.30 release if you want to upgrade your stable media server installation.
