The Galaxy S6 edge and Galaxy S6 edge+ might get it too

The official release of Android 6.0 Marshmallow is just around the corner, but we don't expect many handset makers to be able to offer the new OS as an update this year.

However, we do know that Samsung is readying a major update for some of its top-of-the-line Android smartphones.

According to SamMobile, the new firmware version will change from G925FXXU2COH2 to G925FXXU3COI6, which suggests that it will bring major new features and improvements into the mix.

Sources familiar with Samsung's plans claim the major update will arrive on no less than four high-end Android smartphones launched by the South Korean company: Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 edge, Galaxy S6 edge+, and Galaxy Note 5.

The exact release date of this major update is unknown for the moment, and we shouldn't rule out the possibility of this being just another Lollipop build that contains more stability improvements.

Other Galaxy smartphones should receive the update too

The smartphones mentioned earlier might not be the only ones that Samsung plans to upgrade to Android 6.0 Marshmallow, but these will definitely be among the first.

The question is whether or not Samsung will be able to deliver Android 6.0 Marshmallow updates for any of its smartphones by the end of the year.

This hasn't happened before, so it will be a first for the handset maker if Marshmallow is released for any of the Galaxy smartphones mentioned.

The Nexus devices will be the first to receive Android 6.0 Marshmallow updates soon after the new operating system is released by Google. Motorola might be able to offer similar upgrades a few weeks after the official release.

Speaking of which, Google has already confirmed a launch event for September 29, where the search giant is expected to unveil the LG Nexus 5X and Huawei Nexus 6P, along with Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
