He wanted to marry an independent woman, called her “lazy” for thinking of not going back to work after childbirth

Salma Hayek is in this month’s issue of Allure magazine, with a stunning pictorial meant to show women why a no-Botox policy is the only way to go about aging, and an interview offering an insight into her life as the wife of a multi-millionaire.

Had it not been for him, for Francois-Henri Pinault, Salma would have probably quit acting and following all her other interests after giving birth to their daughter, she reveals.

Husband called her “lazy” for considering an early retirement

Salma and Francois-Henri got engaged in 2007, when they also confirmed they were expecting their first child together: Valentina Paloma Pinault was born later that same year, and her parents were married 2 years later, in 2009.

Shortly after childbirth, Salma recalls, she had a moment when she thought she wanted to quit work for good, but Pinault wouldn’t let her. He reminded her that he had fallen for her because she was independent, and he wanted her to remain this way.

Her financial independence is something she is very proud of, and with good reason. This was probably the tipping point in that discussion, i.e. being reminded that she would be losing herself if she suddenly decided to not work anymore.

“I said, ‘I don’t think I want to work anymore.’ And it was François who said, ‘Oh, no, you’re going back to work.’ And I said, ‘I don’t want to.’ ‘Well, you have to. We’re not putting up with some lazy girl in the house. That’s not who I married’,” Salma says. “He said something so beautiful. ‘I don’t want to be deprived of your work. I want to watch it, too. And the world has not seen the best of you yet. So you cannot stop until some of that is put out.’ So he sort of really pushed me, like, ‘Get up on your feet and get out there.’ And he was right.”

Beauty and motherhood

Elsewhere in the interview, Salma talks about motherhood and her career, and how she manages to keep both in the balance. Her secret, she says, is a pact she made with herself to never spend more than 2 weeks apart from her daughter and her family, and she’s been sticking to it so far.

As for her idea of aging in the spotlight - always a thorny topic of conversation with celebrities, whether male or female - Salma says the key is to take good care of your skin and your body, and not to inject them with all kinds of substances promising the illusion of youth.

Take Botox, for example. When she was younger, she was advised to get injections with it so that she wouldn’t get wrinkles (which is false), but she refused. She’s happy she said no.
