We've all wondered what browser uses less battery at one point or another, but few of us have the technical capabilities to run our own tests to find out.

Not the BattteryBox team though, a company that produces portable batteries for MacBooks and iPhones.

After observing that one of their staff member was consistently getting more juice out of his MacBook laptop, and listening to him brag about how changing to Safari has allowed him to do so, the team decided to create a benchmark and see if his claims were true.

Only popular websites were used in this test

The BattteryBox team modified a system used for testing their BatteryOS software, and set it up to follow power consumption on a MacBook laptop.

The tests took into account only Chrome, Firefox, and Safari, and had staff members access only some of the most known, and regularly accessed websites like YouTube, Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, Facebook, Yahoo Mail, Gmail, Hotmail, Soundcloud, Imgur, Reddit, CNN, Tumblr, Instagram, Twitter, and such.

After gathering all the data, the BatteryBox team concludes that Safari was the clear winner, with Firefox coming second, and Chrome third.

MacBook batteries last one hour more when using Safari, compared to Chrome and Firefox

To be more exact, Safari got 6h 21m out of the battery, Firefox got 5h 29m, and Chrome only 5h 8m.

The websites used in the tests were classified in categories based on their type, Safari winning all except "Tech News," being otherwise rarely defeated in other categories in one website here and there (Hotmail, Huffington Post, and Twitter).

To be honest, the result of this test doesn't surprise us at all, since Safari is an Apple product just like MacBook, so the browser must have undergone some tests prior to release to make sure it won't hog too much of the user's battery.
