A surprising announcement was made by Capcom

Capcom has just announced that the upcoming Street Fighter V game will also be adapted for SteamOS, with the help of Valve.

Street Fighter V is one of the most anticipated games for 2016, and it looks like Valve has managed to convince Capcom to release the game for the SteamOS platform as well. To dispel any kind of confusion, SteamOS support means that the game will be playable on most of the Linux distros out there.

The news comes as a complete surprise since Capcom has never expressed any interest in the Linux platform, and none of the games in their catalog has Linux support. Most of the publishers and developers usually start with something that they have already released for Windows and Mac OS, but Street Fighter V is still in the Beta stages, and it will be a while until it’s going to be released.

Valve has a hand in this Street Fighter V port

The announcement was made on the official blog, in the same place where the rest of the development release info is available. In fact, more details have been revealed about the third Beta version that is going to be playable soon, on both PS4 and PC from 12/18 12:01 AM PT (8:01 AM GMT) until 12/20 @ 10 PM PT.

“Hey everyone. I’m excited to announce that Street Fighter V will be officially supporting Steam OS! We are working closely with Valve on this endeavor, and will have more details to announce shortly, so stay tuned for updates. Street Fighter V will also support the Steam controller, and you’ll be able to try that out right away during the upcoming beta test that takes place from December 18~20,” developers wrote that the official blog.

There are two important details that need to be extracted from this blog entry. First of all, the upcoming Beta version will support the newly released Steam Controller, and secondly, Valve is mentioned by name as an interested party.

This actually makes sense. What better game than Street Fighter V can you use to show what your controller can do? It’s not clear whether the SteamOS support will be available from the start, but at this point, it doesn’t really matter.
