Windows 10 comes with a new browser that replaces Internet Explorer, and Microsoft hopes that, very soon, everyone will discover the improvements it made in this app and at least give it a try.

But the number of those who actually take Edge for a spin and stick with it is very small, with new statistics provided by Net Applications indicating that adoption of the new browser remains very low.

With Windows 10 currently powering only 9 percent of all desktop computers across the globe, Microsoft Edge is still far from becoming a hit, as only 2.81 percent of the PC users are running it on their devices right now. This is a very small improvement from 2.66 percent in October, which is living proof that only few of those who install Windows 10 on their PCs decide to keep using Edge after that.

Internet Explorer still number one

Contrary to what many people think, Internet Explorer continues to be the number one browser on the market, with a share that’s bigger than Chrome’s and Firefox’s.

Right now, Internet Explorer 11, which is the latest version available on Windows 7, 8.1, and 10, has a share of 24.76 percent while Google Chrome is very close with 21.20 percent.

Two other Internet Explorer versions are next, namely 8 and 9 with 10.48 and 6.57 percent, respectively, followed by Firefox 42 with 6.38 percent.

Overall, Internet Explorer holds a 50.03 percent market share, which means that 1 in 2 PCs out there is running it right now. Chrome is second with 31.41 percent while Firefox is third with 12.24 percent.

Unfortunately, Microsoft Edge still has a long way to go to become a powerful browser alternative for Windows 10 users, but the upcoming improvements planned by Microsoft will certainly help. Unfortunately, extension support, which is the most anticipated update, won’t be here by summer of 2016.
