Gamers can get access to Kylo Ren, Rey, Finn and Poe Dameron

The development team in charge of Disney Infinity is announcing that all those who own the 3.0 version of the toy-powered title will be able to get access to a new play set on December 18, which has all its core content based on the Star Wars: The Force Awakens movie.

The entire content drop can now be pre-ordered for the PlayStation 4, the Xbox One, the Wii U from Nintendo and older home consoles.

The official announcement does not offer too many details about the exact kinds of adventures that gamers will be able to get into, only saying that, "players will travel to a galaxy far, far away alongside new heroes and old friends in search for a much-needed ally. Playable characters include Finn, a soldier on a path to adventure and danger, and Rey, a true survivor who is resourceful and capable."

Poe Dameron, the skilled Resistance pilot who uses his abilities to move across the galaxy, and the powerful Kylo Ren, who fights for the First Order, can also be played in the Disney Infinity set based on Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

The fact that the launch is taking place on the same date the movie launches is an indicator that many of the story beats associated with the new J.J. Abrams production will also be present in the video game.

A wide variety of characters from the other two Star Wars trilogies is at the moment available in Disney Infinity, with gamers able to use them to get into adventures that replicate the known storylines or to create entirely new ones.

Given the importance of The Force Awakens, it's possible that more play sets associated with it will be launched in 2016.

Gamers can also explore the new Star Wars universe in Battlefront

Those who do not want to wait until December 18 to get their video game Star Wars fix can explore the original trilogy in the recently launched Battlefront experience created by DICE and published by Electronic Arts.

The game has been praised for being both accessible and very true to the original series of movies, but some shooter fans are saying that it lacks the complexity and depth to remain interesting on the long term.

Star Wars Battlefront will get access to a new Battle of Jakku downloadable content for free on December 1 if they pre-ordered the shooter and one week later if they have not.

The DLC will include a new Turning Point mode, which supports 40 players, and gamers will get a special map that features a Super Star Destroyer crashing as a major event.

The content will not be linked in any way with the story that's coming in The Force Awakens.

DICE has said that it aims to deliver more free maps and Star Cards for the shooter in 2016, even as it also works on a full set of four paid packs.

They are supposed to offer four new heroes and villains, 16 extra maps and more variety by adding another four modes.
