Cloud Imperium Games, the studio that makes Star Citizen, has finally revealed some gameplay that includes planets and travelling within the Universe.

Star Citizen has the honor of being the project that managed to get all of the money from crowdfunding, and just a few days ago the website was showing that the $100 million milestone has been reached. It’s highly unusual, especially since this is a space sim / MMO which can be considered a niche product.

The game has been separated into modules and until now we have just a few modules, including dog fight and a couple of others, but that’s pretty much it. The rest is made just from lots of promises and rumors about what’s coming.

A glimpse at a proper game

Developers from Cloud Imperium Games have decided to release some footage that includes both the surface of the planet and the transition into open space. From the looks of it, they are doing what everyone was already thinking, procedural generation.

It’s impossible to pre-render a planet and just store it for users to load. It would take too much space, and Space Citizen has big plans. For now, it seems that a similar approach to what Elite Dangerous is already doing is the way to go, with a single exception.

The Star Citizen developers are saying that there are going to be seamless transitions between the planet and space. It’s a really difficult thing to pull off, but it could be technically achieved. Elite Dangerous has a similar feature, but the loading process is masked really cleverly so that users don’t really notice, and it feels like the gameplay is continuous.

Space Citizen still doesn’t have a launch date, and at the rate it’s progressing right now, 2016 will most likely not be the launch date for this amazing game.
