Fitbit device spots unusual heart activity during pregnancy

If you’re looking for a fitness tracker that could help you stay in tip-top shape, there are plenty of choices out there, but if you also want a device that might let you know when your wife is pregnant, your options are very limited.

One such possible device is Fitbit, as one lucky Reddit has recently found out after discovering unusual heart activity on his wife’s fitness tracker.

So here’s how the story goes.

Reddit user YoungPToneCharge posted in the /r/fitbit sub to report incorrect data provided by his Fitbit device, claiming that the tracker offered odd heart rate activity numbers for his wife.

“My wifes fitbit is showing her heartbeat being consistently high over the last few days. 2 days ago, a somewhat normal day, she logged 10 hours in the fat burning zone, which i would think to be impossible based on her activity level. Also her calories burned do seem accurate. I would imagine if she was in the fat burning zone she would burn a ton of calories, so its not lining up,” he posted, while asking for instructions to reset and recalibrate the device or the heart rate sensor.

“Id like to try that before I contact customer service about a possible replacement,” he explained.

Is she pregnant?

A pretty unexpected answer was offered by fellow redditor ThatwasunpleasantCharge, when she asked, “has she experienced anything really stressful in the last few days or is it a possibility she is pregnant?”

You can already figure out where this is going. YoungPToneCharge came back a few hours later to confirm that pregnancy was indeed a possibility before actually confirming the next day that “I’m going to be a dad!”

Needless to say, this reddit discussion reached the front page, and everyone congratulated the happy dad, with many people probably thinking of buying a Fitbit for their wives since this thing turns out to be so accurate.

But in fact, pretty much any smartwatch or fitness tracker with heart rate monitoring can do the job, including the Microsoft Band, the Apple Watch, and the Huawei Watch.

Basically, during pregnancy, women’s heart rate increases from the standard 70 to 80 beats per minute to 80 to 90 beats per minute. So wear your smartwatch all the time, and if you see a spike in heart rate that keeps more than a few minutes, you might want to check diaper prices.
