The team at Sony in charge of the PlayStation Network is announcing that the service is at the moment having some extensive problems on both the PlayStation 4 and the older PS3 home consoles.

The official status page explains that gamers are free to log into their accounts and to manage them but will have trouble launching a number of video games.

Sony states, "You may have some difficulty launching games, applications, or online features. Our engineers are working to resolve the issue as soon as possible, and we thank you for your patience."

The team at Bungie has also acknowledged that gamers are currently having trouble signing into Destiny, although it seems that not the entire community is affected.

Sony fans will have issues using the PlayStation Video service as well as Vue and the official Store, but PlayStation Now seems to be working as it should at the moment.

The company is not ready to say when it expects to restore full functionality to the PlayStation Network.

As always, users would appreciate a little more transparency on Sony’s part, especially when it comes to problems that take down the PSN and make it impossible for them to enjoy their favorite video game experiences.

The PlayStation Network has upgraded security

Both the Sony service and the equivalent Xbox Live from Microsoft are now regularly targeted by DDoS attacks coming from a variety of nefarious groups, which either want to simply bring them down or steal the personal data of users.

The two companies have announced that they are upgrading their security measures and collaborating with each other and with officials to try and track down the perpetrators.

The PlayStation Network was hit by a massive hack in 2011, and since then, Sony has pledged to improve its game infrastructure, which should eventually be able to deter any future such intrusions.

The PlayStation 4 has benefited a lot from the functionality added by the PSN, and the company has long-term plans to introduce more streaming options for both video game and other content, which will put an even heavier emphasis on the service.
