Today, January 3, 2016, the developers of the PlayOnLinux and PlayOnMac software, two open source tools that let GNU/Linux and Mac OS X users play Windows games, have announced the release of version 4.2.10.

Despite the fact that more and more games now have support for the Linux platforms, not to mention Apple's Mac OS, it would appear that software like PlayOnLinux and PlayOnMac is still popular among gamers who want to migrate to a more secure and safe operating system.

Today's release of PlayOnLinux and PlayOnMac brings support for the recently released Wine 1.8 software, which is now used as the default Wine version for the Mac OS X platform. To be more precise, the Wine-Staging 1.8 app is used in PlayOnLinux 4.2.10 and PlayOnMac 4.2.10.

"Wine 1.8 staging is now the default wine version on OSX. The build process has been improved thanks to wine-staging team so that the compiler supports ms_hook_prologue, allowing function hotpatching. This should improve the compatibility of some applications like Steam," said Quentin Paris.

Improvements, improvements, and more improvements

In addition to rebasing the software on the Wine-Staging 1.8 software, the PlayOnLinux/PlayOnMac developers have added several other enhancements, such as an improved build process, thus adding compiler support for ms_hook_prologue for the hotpatching function, which should make certain apps work better.

Additionally, PlayOnLinux 4.2.10 and PlayOnMac 4.2.10 come with improvements to the wineprefix tab from the configuration panel, as well as various Wine-Staging instructions for full scripting support. You can download PlayOnLinux 4.2.10 and PlayOnMac 4.2.10 right now from Softpedia.

We're informing GNU/Linux users that they can install the latest version of PlayOnLinux via the default software repositories of their distributions in the coming hours or days, so make sure that you check for updates regularly. Mac OS X users can install/update the software as we speak. More details and other download links can be found on the project's website.
