Linux Lite 2.8 is the last point release in the 2.0 series of the distribution, and it has been dedicated to the memory of Ian Murdock, the creator of the well-known Debian Project and the Debian GNU/Linux operating system, who sadly passed away on December 28, 2015. Linux Lite 2.8 is mostly a maintenance build that aims to keep the OS stable and reliable for its dedicated users.
"During this development cycle, the open source software community lost a pioneering visionary. Linux Lite dedicates this release in honor, and to the memory of Ian Murdock, founder of Debian," reads the official announcement. "As this is the last build of Linux Lite in the 2.0 series, we wanted to finish off with a balance of great hardware support with kernel 3.19, whilst maintaining our renown stability."
Here's what's new in Linux Lite 2.8
Powered by Linux kernel 3.19, which has been reinforced with support for the latest hardware components, and based on the Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS (Trusty Tahr) operating system, Linux Lite 2.8 ships with support for the Btrfs file system. It also features support for H.265 encoded videos, which has been implemented in the VLC Media Player software, the xbacklight utility for adjusting the brightness, as well as new wallpapers.
As expected, several software components have been updated to their latest versions, and among the most important ones, we can mention the Mozilla Firefox 44.0 web browser and Mozilla Thunderbird 38.5.1 email and news client. The LibreOffice office suite has been updated as well to version 5.0.4 RC2. Among other new things, Linux Lite comes with a new Thunar Media Tags plugin and out-of-the-box support for Hulu.
