Linux kernel developer Jiri Slaby has informed us all about the immediate availability for download of the fifty-third maintenance version for the long-term supported Linux 3.12 kernel series.

Linux kernel 3.12.53 LTS is an important milestone, and according to the appended shortlog, it changes a total of 45 files, with 197 insertions and 138 deletions. Among the most important improvements, we can mention bugfixes for the x86, m68k, Blackfin, m32r, and PowerPC (PPC) hardware architectures, along with updates to the networking stack, especially for things like IPv6, IPv4, and SCTP (Stream Control Transmission Protocol).

"I'm announcing the release of the 3.12.53 kernel. All users of the 3.12 kernel series must upgrade," says Jiri Slaby. "The updated 3.12.y git tree can be found at: git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git linux-3.12.y and can be browsed at the normal kernel.org git web browser: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git;a=summary."

Users are urged to update as soon as possible

Besides the networking and architecture improvements, Linux kernel 3.12.53 LTS updates several drivers, especially for things like GPU (Intel i915), Integrated Services for Digital Network (ISDN), networking (mostly PPP and Serial Line Internet Protocol (SLIP)), PCI, SCSI, USB, and Xen. Also, there are a few Intel HDA sound enhancements and a couple of security patches.

As usual, all users who are running a GNU/Linux operating system powered by a kernel from the Linux 3.12 LTS series are urged to update to the Linux kernel 3.12.53 LTS release as soon as possible, or more precisely when the new version lands in the default software repositories of their distributions. Alternatively, you can manually update by compiling the sources, which you can download right now from the kernel.org website or via Softpedia.
