Jiri Slaby, the maintainer of the long-term supported Linux 3.12 kernel series, had the pleasure of announcing a few minutes ago that the forty-eighth maintenance release of the branch is now available for download.

According to the attached shortlog, Linux kernel 3.12.48 LTS is a fairly normal release that brings various networking improvements, especially for the IPv6 and IPv4 protocols, but also for things like Netfilter, Netlink, Transparent Inter-process Communication (TIPC), RDS, and Bridge, fixes issues with the Common Internet File System (CIFS), and updates several drivers, including for SCSI, ISDN, GPU, MD, MFD, and networking.

"I'm announcing the release of the 3.12.48 kernel. All users of the 3.12 kernel series must upgrade," says Jiri Slaby. "The updated 3.12.y git tree can be found at: git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git linux-3.12.y and can be browsed at the normal kernel.org git web browser: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git;a=summary."

All users of Linux kernel 3.12 LTS must update immediately

As expected, all users of the Linux 3.12 LTS kernel branch are urged to update to the 3.12.48 maintenance release as soon as possible, or more precisely as soon as the new version arrives in the default software repositories of your GNU/Linux operating system, which is also the preferred method for regular users who don't know who to compile a kernel.

Additionally, we're urging distribution vendors to download the Linux kernel 3.12.48 LTS sources right now via Softpedia or from the kernel.org website and start updating the kernel packages of their GNU/Linux distributions. Of course, they are free to add any patches to improve the overall performance. In the meantime, if you're curious to see what exactly has been changed in this release of Linux 3.12 LTS, we recommend reading the diff from Linux kernel 3.12.47 LTS.
