Sasha Levin, a kernel developer and maintainer of the Linux 3.18 LTS (Long-Term Support) kernel branch, has announced the release and immediate availability for download of Linux kernel 3.18.22.

Looking at the appended shortlog, we can notice that Linux kernel 3.18.22 LTS contains numerous improvements for the x86 hardware architecture, a handful of enhancements for the ARM64 and MIPS instruction set architectures, as well as networking fixes, especially for things like IPv6, IPv4, Bridge, NetLink, Remote Desktop Services (RDS), and Transparent Inter-process Communication (TIPC).

Of course, there's no maintenance version of a long-term supported or mainline kernel branch without various updated drivers. As such, we can notice that Linux kernel 3.18.22 LTS comes with many driver updates, in particular for ATA, Block, Crypto, EDAC, VMWare guest GL, Radeon GPU, HID, ISDN, MD, MFD, SCSI, and networking (Ethernet, Wireless, and Bonding).

"I'm announcing the release of the 3.18.22 kernel. All users of the 3.18 kernel series must upgrade," says Sasha Levin. "The updated 3.18.y git tree can be found at: git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git linux-3.18.y and can be browsed at the normal kernel.org git web browser: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git;a=summary."

All users of the Linux 3.18 LTS kernel series must update

As usual with any new point release of an LTS kernel branch, all users are urged to update as soon as possible. Therefore, if your Linux kernel-based operating system is powered by kernel packages from the Linux 3.18 LTS branch, we recommend that you immediately update to the Linux kernel 3.18.22 release.

We also recommend OS vendors to download the Linux kernel 3.18.22 LTS sources right now from the kernel.org website or via Softpedia by clicking the appended link above and start compiling by hand and update the kernel packages for their GNU/Linux distributions, so users can update to the new version as soon as possible.
