Immediately after announcing the release of the Linux kernel 4.2.4 and Linux kernel 4.1.11 LTS, renowned kernel maintainer Greg Kroah-Hartman had the great pleasure of publishing details about the immediate availability for download of Linux kernel 3.14.55 LTS.

Being an LTS (Long-Term Support) version, Linux 3.14 will receive updates for a few more months, and the fifty-fifth maintenance release is proof that the developers are hard at work to fix the latest issues reported by users since the previous version of the kernel, as well as to implement new features and add support for modern hardware components.

Looking at the appended diff from Linux kernel 3.14.54 LTS, we can notice that Linux kernel 3.14.55 LTS is a normal release that introduces improvements to the ARM, ARM64, Hexagon, m68k, MIPS, PowerPC, and x86 hardware architectures, various changes to the Btrfs, CIFS, and JBD2 filesystems, networking updates (mostly for Netfilter), as well as sound, perf, and KVM (Kernel Virtual Machine) fixes.

"I'm announcing the release of the 3.14.55 kernel. All users of the 3.14 kernel series must upgrade," says Greg Kroah-Hartman. "The updated 3.14.y git tree can be found at: git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git linux-3.14.y and can be browsed at the normal kernel.org git web browser: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git;a=summary."

Several drivers were updated

There's no maintenance version of a Linux kernel branch without updated drivers, so Linux kernel 3.14.55 LTS includes many of them for things like CLK, DMA, GPU, hwmon, InfiniBand, Macintosh, MD, MTD, SCSI, SPI, Android, and USB. In numbers, Linux kernel 3.14.55 LTS changes 91 files with 872 insertions and 319 deletions.

All users of the Linux 3.14 LTS kernel series are urged to update to the 3.14.55 version as soon as it arrives in the default software repositories of your Linux kernel-based operating systems. OS vendors and advances users who know how to compile a kernel by hand are invited to download the Linux kernel 3.14.55 LTS sources right now from either Softpedia or the kernel.org website.
