After announcing the release of the first maintenance version of the latest, most advanced Linux kernel series, Linux kernel 4.2.1, renowned kernel developer/maintainer Greg Kroah-Hartman has posted news about the eighth point release of the most advanced long-term supported kernel branch, Linux kernel 4.1 LTS.

According to the diff from Linux kernel 4.1.7 LTS, which was announced a week ago, on September 14, 2015, the new maintenance release of Linux 4.1 LTS is here to add numerous fixes to the x86 instruction set architecture, but also some fixes for the ARM, PowerPC (PPC), s390, and Xtensa hardware platforms.

Many file systems have received improvements, including EXT4, GFS2, CIFS, HFS, HFS+, HostFS, HPFS, OCFS2, OverlayFS, ReiserFS, and XFS, and there are numerous updated drivers in Linux kernel 4.1.8 LTS, especially for things like ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface), ATA, USB, TTY, CLK, GPU/DRM (mostly AMD, Radeon, and Intel i915), PCI, iiO, HID, and SoC.

"I'm announcing the release of the 4.1.8 kernel. All users of the 4.1 kernel series must upgrade," says Greg Kroah-Hartman. "The updated 4.1.y git tree can be found at: git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git linux-4.1.y and can be browsed at the normal kernel.org git web browser: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git;a=summary."

Please update as soon as possible

On this occasion, we're urging all users of the Linux 4.1 LTS kernel series to update their kernel packages to Linux kernel 4.1.8 LTS as soon as possible, or more precisely immediately after it arrives in the default software repositories of their Linux kernel-based operating systems.

GNU/Linux distribution maintainers and advanced users can download the Linux kernel 4.1.8 LTS sources via Softpedia or from the kernel.org website, whichever suits them best, and compile the new version by hand. Please note that Linux kernels 3.10.89 LTS, 3.14.53 LTS, and 3.4.109 LTS have been released as well.
