On September 13, Greg Kroah-Hartman, a renowned kernel maintainer, had the pleasure of announcing the immediate availability for download of the seventh point release of the Linux 4.1 LTS kernel series, immediately after releasing Linux kernel 3.14.52 LTS.

Linux 4.1 is the most advanced long-term supported (LTS) branch of the Linux kernel. The seventh maintenance release, Linux kernel 4.1.7, is here to introduce a great number of changes, as well as to fix bugs reported by users since the previous release and update several drivers, bringing better support for the latest hardware or improving support for existing ones.

According to the appended shortlog, the biggest changes are the ARM hardware architecture improvements. Moreover, Linux kernel 4.1.7 LTS adds various improvements to the ARM64, MIPS, and x86 architectures, introduces some sound enhancements, and updates various drivers, especially for things like ATA, CLK, Crypto, EDAC, GPU (mostly Intel i915), IRQ chip, MD, MFD, networking (mostly wireless), PCI, SCSI, iSCSI, and Xen.

"I'm announcing the release of the 4.1.7 kernel. All users of the 4.1 kernel series must upgrade," says Greg Kroah-Hartman. "The updated 4.1.y git tree can be found at: git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git linux-4.1.y and can be browsed at the normal kernel.org git web browser: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git;a=summary."

All users of the Linux kernel 4.1 LTS series must update as soon as possible

As expected, all GNU/Linux users who run distributions powered by a kernel from the Linux 4.1 LTS series are urged to update their systems as soon as possible, or more precisely, as soon as the Linux kernel 4.1.7 packages arrive in the default software repositories of their Linux kernel-based operating systems.

Of course, skilled users who know how to update the kernel themselves and distribution vendors are also urged to download the Linux kernel 4.1.7 LTS sources right now from either the kernel.org website or via Softpedia and start compiling. More details about the bugs fixed in Linux kernel 4.1.7 LTS can be found in the official announcement.
