Immediately after announcing the release of Linux kernel 3.10.81 LTS and Linux kernel 3.14.45 LTS, Greg Kroah-Hartman has also published details about the sixth maintenance version of the Linux 4.0 kernel.

According to the announcement, it appears that Linux kernel 4.0.6 is a massive release that includes a significant amount of changes, starting with updated drivers and ending with improvements to the Btrfs file system and the networking stack.

Taking a closer look, we can see that Linux kernel 4.0.6 updates the ARM, ARM64, MIPS, and x86 hardware architectures, fixes multiple issues with the Btrfs filesystem, adds great improvements to networking, especially for the IPv6 and IPv4 protocols, and includes several sound enhancements.

As mentioned, there are numerous updated drivers included in the sixth point release of Linux kernel 4.0, for things like ATA, DMA, DRM (mostly Radeom and Intel i915), i2c, iiO, input, IOMMU, MD, Networking, Staging, TTY, USB, and Virtio.

"I'm announcing the release of the 4.0.6 kernel. All users of the 4.0 kernel series must upgrade," says Greg Kroah-Hartman. "The updated 4.0.y git tree can be browsed at the normal kernel.org git web browser: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git;a=summary."

All Linux 4.0 kernel users must upgrade immediately

As expected, Greg Kroah-Hartman urges all users of the Linux 4.0 kernel series to upgrade their installations as soon as possible to Linux kernel 4.0.6, which might be available in the main software repositories of their favorite GNU/Linux distribution in the coming hours or days.

Distribution vendors and advanced users who know how to compile a kernel and don't have time to wait, can download the Linux kernel 4.0.6 sources right now directly from the kernel.org website or via Softpedia.
