The ISO images for Linux Mint 17.2 "Rafaela" Cinnamon have been out for a couple of days, so today's announcement is actually just a formality. Things haven't changed all that much from the previous Release Candidate that landed last week, so the developers have been quick to push the stable version. It packs quite a few upgrades, especially for the Cinnamon desktop environment, which has been upgraded to a new versions.

As you all know very well, Linux Mint is an operating system based on Ubuntu. Since the release of the 17.x branch, the developers have explained that they will be using the Ubuntu LTS bases. This means that the current 17.x branch is based on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, although significant changes have been done. This is the second major update for the operating systems and it certainly won't be the last.

Linux Mint 17.2 "Rafaela" Cinnamon is an important release

The bulk of the new release is covered by the upgrade to Cinnamon 2.6, but there are other points of interest, like the Linux kernel, the Update Manager, the login screen, Software Sources, and a lot more.

"Linux Mint 17.2 is a long term support release which will be supported until 2019. It comes with updated software and brings refinements and many new features to make your desktop even more comfortable to use.
