LinkedIn changes email notification settings for all users, cuts down the number of sent-out emails by 40%

LinkedIn has just announced that they have implemented changes to their email notification system, which will cut down the number of emails users receive with default settings by 40%.

The announcement comes after users have complained for years about the huge number of emails they were receiving from the network on a weekly basis.

LinkedIn did address this issue, but in a masked way, without actually fixing or advertising it to users.

For a couple of years, users have been able to configure (and still are) the type and frequency of emails they receive from the social network, using a special panel within their account.

The problem was that, by default, users who had just signed up or didn't manually go into their account's settings page to disable email notifications were flooded with tens of emails per week.

"For every 10 emails we used to send, we’ve removed 4 of them"

Now, after the company was the butt of all jokes when it comes to user engagement, it is actively rethinking this policy by grouping several notifications together, and only sending them once a week.

For starters, invitations to connect with other users will arrive once a week from now on for all those with default settings, and if you're subscribed to different groups, you'll get updates from all groups at once, in one single email, instead of separate messages.

Custom email notification settings made through the LinkedIn settings panel will still be respected, and this change will affect only users who don't have such custom options put in place.

This is spectacular news for users who have found the social network very useful in their work search, and even better news for the LinkedIn staff, who can now hold their head high amongst the Silicon Valley elite and not be made fun of as being the "spammy social network," as they have been until now.
