The Document Foundation has finally released LibreOffice 5.0, the next-generation open-source office suite. It's a new major release in the series, and it brings Windows 10 compatibility and lots of interoperability features.

Each new edition of LibreOffice seems to be bigger than the previous one, and the developers from The Document Foundation are not pulling any punches. They've made hundreds of changes and improvements, making it difficult even to list everything in one place. As usual, a large part of the new release is made up of various fixes, but new features have been implemented as well.

The Document Foundation has estimated that the previous 4.x branch has been used by more than 80 million users, so any new release puts huge pressure on the team to deliver the best experience possible. That means that everything needs to be spot on, even if it's a big release and lots of new features have been added.

LibreOffice 5.0 is ready for download

"LibreOffice 5.0 sports a significantly improved user interface, with a better management of the screen space and a cleaner look. In addition, it offers better interoperability with office suites such as Microsoft Office and Apple iWork, thanks to new and improved filters to handle non standard formats. Other improvements have been added to every module of the suite, and Windows 64bit builds (Vista and later) have been added," reads the official announcement.

We've already covered the new features in the latest LibreOffice 5.0, and users will be glad to know that they'll find enhanced spreadsheet features, lots of Writer improvements, better filters for better documents, new sidebar options, and a lot more.

If you have an Ubuntu system, then you can already download and install this version via an official PPA. Just enter these commands in a terminal near you (root is needed):
