On August 3, Ken Moore from the PC-BSD development team had the great pleasure of announcing the immediate availability for download of the sixth maintenance release of the Lumina Desktop 0.8 desktop environment for PC-BSD and FreeBSD OSes.

According to the release notes, Lumina Desktop 0.8.6 brings with it significant new features, such as support for the "Actions" extension of the XDG desktop specifications, allowing apps to set a number of several alternative startup methods, as well as to display them on the Applications menu as submenus.

The sixth point release of Lumina Desktop 0.8 comes with a different widget setup for the Lumina OSD (On-Screen Display) in order to make it appear faster, and adds a new function, called _ifexist, to all session options in the luminaDesktop.conf configuration file, allowing distributors to set up default apps more quickly via a smart tree of options.

Additionally, there's a lot of work done for localizations, such as the addition of support for setting system locale overrides, so you can easily combine multiple locales for different outputs, support for switching a session's locale on-the-fly, translation mechanism improvements, as well as more language translations.

"Just in time for PC-BSD & FreeBSD 10.2 (coming soon), the Lumina desktop has been updated to version 0.8.6," says Ken Moore on behalf of the PC-BSD team. "This version contains a number of updates for non-English users (following up all the new translations that are now available), as well as a number of important bugfixes, and support for an additional FreeDesktop specification."

Multiple bugs were fixed

In addition to the changes mentioned above, Lumina Desktop 0.8.6 contains bugfixes, such as those for issues with the Fluxbox window manager related to virtual desktop windows, issues with adjustment routines and window detection related to full-screen apps, and issues with automatic detections and load of routines related to the new QtQuick plugins.

Last but not least, the CTRL+X keyboard shortcut was added to the Insight file manager and can be used for cutting items, and the active re-loading of icons was fixed, as there were issues when the user attempted to change the icon theme. You can download the new Lumina Desktop 0.8.6 desktop environment right now from the its website.
