He truly is the fashion genius he thinks he is

Kanye West’s second collection for Adidas, which debuted at the New York Fashion Week 2015, was met widely with ridicule, but he still thinks he’s a fashion genius. Unsurprisingly, his wife Kim Kardashian West is of the same opinion: he is a fashion genius because he is the one who turned her into a fashion icon.

The latest video from CNN Style (see below) focuses on Kim’s rise from derided reality star to the status of celebrity all designers want to put in the first row at their shows. While the video underlines that Kim’s inclusion in the high fashion world was inevitable because designers had started understanding her popularity (which had nothing to do with fashion), she likes to think it’s because of Kanye.

Kanye changed everything

Shortly after Kim and Kanye went public with their romance, his first cameo on Keeping Up with the Kardashians aired: it showed him going through her wardrobe and telling her that he would be dressing her from then on.

Since then, Kanye has been Kim’s stylist, with the exception of her first pregnancy, when she says she had 5 different stylists. That’s supposed to account for the horrible sartorial choices she made then.

Today, Kim Kardashian is widely considered a fashion icon, even though most of her outfits still provide celebrity bloggers with the best joke material possible.

“I really think that my relationship with my husband Kanye really changed everything,” Kim says. “I mean, back in the day I thought I had the best style. I look back at outfits and I'm, like, mortified. Kanye sees what’s out there on the streets and just knows how to translate that into something that would look good on me. Just helping me push my limits a little bit and trying new things.”

Kanye did manage to turn Kim into an icon

Kanye is also the first to state out loud that Kim was an icon, the “Marilyn Monroe of our times,” the most gorgeous, classy and stylish woman in the world.

Clearly, since he was talking about a woman he loved, he gets a pass, but the world knows that Kim is neither fashionable nor stylish.

She is something more important: she is popular, and in today’s world, popularity means everything. Even though fashion designers will still mock her (but only after they put her in the first row at their shows), everything she wears will still become a trend because it’s on her and she has millions of adoring fans, dying to replicate her look.
