14 DAY TRIAL // The KDE community has just revealed that the new Plasma 5.4 desktop is now out and ready for download. It comes with a large number of changes and improvements, making it an obvious candidate for the next round of upgrades.
The KDE Plasma desktop is the first thing a user sees when he opens up a KDE-powered operating system, and developers are very much aware that anything they do will be immediately noticed. The team also follows a very precise schedule, and they managed to keep to it, until now. All the releases in the 5.4 branch have arrived on time, so there was no reason for the rest of them to be late.
As usual, you can expect to see the new KDE Plasma 5.4 land in distributions pretty soon, especially if we keep in mind that some developers even provided the version. It looks like it's full of all kinds of interesting changes and that it's probably the best release made so far since the switch to 5.0.
KDE Plasma 5.4 features a cool, alternative launcher
It's difficult to identify the most interesting new feature that has landed with KDE Plasma 5.4, and a lot of users will probably focus on the Wayland support, but the new launcher seems to be much more appealing. Wayland is still pretty far from being a true replacement, but the launch is here now.
"This release of Plasma brings many nice touches for our users such as much improved high DPI support, KRunner auto-completion and many new beautiful Breeze icons. It also lays the ground for the future with a tech preview of Wayland session available. We're shipping a few new components such as an Audio Volume Plasma Widget, monitor calibration tool and the User Manager tool comes out of beta," reads the official announcement.
