On October 2, Anke Boersma had the great pleasure of announcing the release and immediate availability for download of the KaOS 2015.10 GNU/Linux computer operating system.

According to the announcement, KaOS 2015.10 is based on the latest KDE technologies, including the KDE Plasma 5.4.1 desktop environment, KDE Applications 15.08.1 software suites, as well as KDE Frameworks 5.14.0. The distribution's default XFS filesystem received CRC and finobt support, and the installer got a License Approval page, forcing users to accept the EULA if they want to install proprietary drivers.

Furthermore, the SDDM login manager now features a Plasma Wayland session, but the X11 session is the default one at the moment, and multiple applications have been updated to their latest versions available, including Calligra 3.0 Alpha, NetworkManager 1.0.6, Plasma-nm 5.4.1, Ncurses 6.0, OpenCV 3.0.0, Xfsprogs 4.2.0, and GStreamer 1.6.0.

"It is with great pleasure to present to you the 2015.10 ISO. As always with this rolling distribution you will find the very latest packages for the Plasma Desktop, this includes Frameworks 5.14.0, Plasma 5.4.1 and KDE Applications 15.08.1," says Anke Boersma. "Bigger news though are two changes. This ISO is the first time that the default XFS filesystem is CRC and finobt enabled."

Powered by Linux kernel 4.1.9 LTS

Being powered by the latest Linux 4.1.9 LTS kernel, KaOS 2015.10 uses the systemd 226 init system, GRUB 2.02 Beta bootloader, Nvidia 352.41 proprietary video driver, X.Org Server 1.17.2 display server, GCC (GNU Compiler Collection) 4.9.4, Glibc 2.21, Mesa 3D Graphics Library 11.0.2, Kmod 21, and Python 3.4.3. Many apps have been ported to KDE Frameworks 5 and Qt 5, including Basket, Sweeper, Lyx, KRFB, and KSuperkey.

Last but not least, the latest version of the Calamares graphical installer has been included in the new KaOS version, and the Octopi package manager recieved many interesting features. For UEFI installs, KaOS uses the systemd-boot bootloader.

Download KaOS 2015.10 right now from Softpedia, where the operating system is distributed as a 64-bit Live DVD ISO image.
