The new packages can be installed with a PPA

Even if Ubuntu and its flavors don’t usually receive big updates after an official release, Kubuntu doesn’t subscribe to this policy and get big updates for the Plasma desktop and other KDE components.

Kubuntu developers have finally pushed some of the updates that have been piling up, and they are working on some new ones as well. Kubuntu is a Linux distribution that uses the KDE desktop environment, which is updated really often. It would have been a shame if Kubuntu users had to wait six months to get proper KDE upgrades, but that’s not the case.

Even if Kubuntu has a nine-month support period (with the exception of LTS releases), the developers make sure that the desktop environment is upgraded with the latest package. A lot of testing is required, and these upgrades are not pushed through the regular channels in a forced manner.

Kubuntu is getting the latest KDE

“In the last months after the 15.10 release, developers have been very busy updating and improving our workflows and documentation which left little time for packaging. But we’re getting back on track, so here’s the missing announcement for Plasma 5.4.3 and KDE Applications 15.08.3,” developers have explained.

They also said that Plasma 5.5 is also coming, soon after the packaging for the development release is ready.

Installing the Plasma 5.4.3 and KDE Applications 15.08.3 packages can be done really easily by adding a PPA to the distribution and upgrading the OS. Just enter the following commands in a terminal near you:

code
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
This is a fairly big update, and it will take a while to complete, especially if you don’t have a fast Internet connection or a slower computer. Also, make sure that you reboot the system in order to complete the process.
