Apple is offering iPhone owners several ways to back up their data, including direct integration of iCloud support, but there still are many people out there who refuse to use any of them. And in case an accident happens, the last resort for some is to sue Apple because why not?

Deric White, 68, decided to file a lawsuit against Apple after store staff accidentally removed all his photos and contacts when trying to repair his iPhone.

According to a report by The Sun, White took his iPhone 5 at the Regent Street Apple Store in London for undisclosed repairs, but when he went back to the store to get his phone, he discovered that all photos and contacts were no longer on the device.

“My life was saved on that phone,” he was quoted as saying by the aforementioned source. “I lost my favorite video of a giant tortoise biting my hand on honeymoon in the Seychelles.”

A second honeymoon

The 68-year-old iPhone owner claimed he lost not only photos from his honeymoon but also contacts that he had collected in the last 15 years.

Apple Store only asked whether the man backed files when he finally discovered that all his personal data was gone, he claims, so he’s now suing the Cupertino-based company and asking for £5,000 ($7,500 / €7,200) in damages. If he wins the lawsuit, he plans to spend the money on another honeymoon and try to shoot as many photos as possible.

On the other hand, Apple is very confident that the company won’t lose the lawsuit, explaining that “the claimant has not demonstrated how he suffered any loss.”

If you’re afraid that you might lose your data stored on the iPhone, setting up iCloud is the best way to avoid this. Just go to Settings > iCloud and choose what data to back up in the cloud, with support also being offered for photos and contacts.
