This is the first rumor concerning the design of the phone

Apple is expected to launch the new-generation iPhone in the fall, but little is known so far in terms of design, except for the fact that it might give up on the audio jack.

But a new report coming from MacRumors and citing sources with knowledge of the matter (this pretty much means that you should take it with a pinch of salt for now) claims that the upcoming model could give up on the camera bump on the rear side and thus come with a completely flat back.

Apple’s decision to specifically redesign the iPhone in this area is said to come following the criticism the company received when it unveiled the iPhone 6, with many people blasting the firm for creating that small camera bump on the back.

Fewer antenna bands

At the same time, there’s word that the iPhone 7 could remove some of the antenna bands used on the device, with Apple said to be sticking with the top and bottom edges only.

Overall, the device is likely to feature a look similar to the one of the iPhone 6s, which could cause even more criticism, as people expect the device to come with a significant redesign and smaller bezels, especially on the Plus version. Rumor has it, however, that Apple wants to make it thinner than the current version, and this is one of the reasons the company plans to remove the audio connector.

Up until now, it’s not yet clear if Apple is indeed going forward with the idea of removing the 3.5mm jack, but it’s very clear that the Lightning connector would play a much more important role on future models, especially given the company’s efforts to improve the design of the phone.

Nothing is certain at this point, but expect more information to emerge in the coming months as we get closer to the official launch. The next iPhone to see daylight will be the 4-inch model projected to go live in March together with the iPad Air 3.
