As you might have already guessed, the Calculate Linux MATE flavor is built around the traditional MATE desktop environment, which is a clone of the classic GNOME desktop interface, but including the same powerful GNU/Linux technologies that are used in all the other Calculate Linux editions.

Using the MATE 1.8 desktop environment, Calculate Linux 14.16.2 MATE contains up-to-date open-source software, such as the LibreOffice 4.4 office suite, Chromium 43 web browser, Claws-Mail 3.11.1 email client, Pidgin 2.10.11 instant messenger, GIMP 2.8.14 image editor and viewer, SMplayer 14.9.0 video player, and Clementine 1.2.3 audio player.
It works with the Calculate Directory Server edition
Calculate Linux MATE has been designed from the ground up to be fully compatible with the Calculate Directory Server (CDS) edition of the distribution, and uses the common software repositories of binary packages that are currently available for all the other Calculate Linux flavors. Of course, all packages are backward compatible with Gentoo.
Various under-the-hood tweaks have been added to the MATE desktop environment in Calculate Linux MATE to offer a much better traditional desktop experience to users.
