Stats show that Chrome is the number one browser

Microsoft has introduced a new browser in Windows 10 called Edge in order to replace Internet Explorer, and statistics show that the good old app is rapidly losing ground as users are moving to modern alternatives.

Market share figures provided by StatCounter for the month of September 2015 show that Internet Explorer is now the third most-used browser in the world, with a share of only 17.1 percent. Its replacement, Microsoft Edge, is nowhere to be seen in these charts and is probably included in the Other category that currently has 2.93 percent.

Google Chrome, on the other hand, is number one with a share of 56.53 percent, which means that one in two computers out there is currently running Google's browser.

Internet Explorer's second position now belongs to Mozilla Firefox, which has reached a share of 17.33 percent, enough to overtake Microsoft's browser whose decline is very likely to continue dropping in the coming months.

Improvements coming to Edge browser

Even though Edge's adoption is more or less impacted by the limited availability, as the browser can only be used on Windows 10, Microsoft hopes that as more users move to the new operating system, the market share of its browser can improve too.

As a result, it's working on several big improvements to Edge browser, including extension support, which will greatly expand its functionality.

Microsoft is aiming to make Google Chrome extensions work on Edge browser with little to no modification, which will obviously open a completely new world for Windows 10 users and make it easier to address the lack of built-in features, but at the same time, to offer more customization and personalization options.

All these improvements are very likely to be released sometime in the next couple of months, as Microsoft's still working on them, but specific release details are yet to be provided.
