The development team at 343 Industries and publisher Microsoft might be focused on the final development touches for Halo 5: Guardians and the work to improve Halo: The Master Chief Collection, but they are also dealing with an extended universe that gives them new character development opportunities.

The official Halo Waypoint site features more information on the Halo: Hunters in the Dark novel, which is designed to give gamers a chance to read a story from Peter David exploring events that take place on Installation 00.

A hybrid crew of both humans and Sangheili needs to deal with a threat that can destroy life in the galaxy, a classic thread for the series.

The book gives fans a chance to find out more information about Usze 'Taham and N'tho 'Sraom, who were previously featured as playable characters in Halo 3.

Halo: Hunters in the Dark also features Olympia Vale, who has a direct connection with the coming Halo 5: Guardians through Agent Locke and his hunt for Master Chief.

Brian Reed, the writer of the coming video game, explains, "The fun of the Halo franchise is that we have all these outlets for telling stories. So we got to meet Locke in Halo: Nightfall, and Tanaka in the comics, and Vale in the novels. That’s a luxury a lot of other games/movies/, etc. don’t share."

Halo 5: Guardians brings the full might of the series to the Xbox One

Reed states that gamers will be happy to learn more about Vale in Hunters in the Dark because it makes it much easier to relate to the character when she appears in the coming shooter as part of Fireteam Osiris.

Microsoft has plans to introduce more novels linked to the franchise in the coming months.

There are also plans at Showtime to continue to work on the Steven Spielberg television series that was supposed to appear during this year as well.

Halo 5: Guardians will be launched on the Xbox One on October 27.

Gamers will be able to play through the entire core campaign cooperatively with their friends, and each of the characters that they will use will have a unique HUD and personality to explore.
