Video game developer 343 Industries and publisher Microsoft have been talking a lot about the game modes that will be part of the coming Halo 5: Guardians shooter, and now the two companies are ready to introduce more information on the lore backing some of the maps that gamers will be able to explore.

In a new Halo Waypoint article, the focus is on Fathom and Coliseum, which will apparently be offered for both Warzone and Arena.

Fathom is set inside a research base that the UNSC has put deep below the ocean on Beta Gabriel, which guards the site where two massive spaceships have crashed.

343 Industries states Spartans from Of Uncommon Courage needed to infiltrate the Splendid Intention carrier in order to steal weapon plans.

The studio adds, "Through a series of events as classified as they are unknown, the mission did not go as planned. Both Of Uncommon Courage and Splendid Intention were downed in the southern waters of Beta Gabriel, where the ships remain to this day, awaiting rediscovery by the crew of the Fathom."

Coliseum is a Forerunner military compound that is hidden inside the shadows of the Burn, with facilities that are designed to hone the skills of those who enter it.

Halo 5: Guardians will deliver both cooperative and competitive elements

343 Industries and Microsoft are trying to make the coming Master Chief shooter as appealing as possible to a broad array of gamers, even some who might have never played an installment in the franchise before.

The biggest new element of the Halo 5: Guardians multiplayer is Warzone, which blends elements of both Player versus Player and Player versus Environment to deliver massive battles that are both tactical and unpredictable.

There are also tweaks to the Arena experience, which will be more focused on competitive action.

The two companies are also trying to make the title interesting from an eSports perspective, saying that they are planning to organize a big World Championship in the winter, with a total prize pool of 1 million dollars (900,000 Euro).

Halo 5: Guardians will be out only on the Xbox One on October 27 of this year.
