14 DAY TRIAL // A new package has just landed in Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus), and it’s the promised GNOME Calendar.
The development of Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) is still far from being completed, and the Ubuntu Team has started to add some of the packages that have been promised. One of the apps that haven been announced for Ubuntu 16.04 is the GNOME Calendar, and it’s now implemented by default.
Before you get all excited about it, you should know that it’s just available as a regular application, and it hasn’t been fully integrated. I expected to find it in the top bar, replacing the old one, but you can only open it from the launcher.
Also, it’s not using the Ubuntu window manager, and it looks terrible in Unity, but that will change soon. The most important thing is that it works and that it’s available by default.
GNOME Calendar is just a small part
We recently covered some of the features that are being planned for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus), and it looks like the implementation of GNOME Software is one of the smaller ones. Even so, it does signal a change of pace for the Ubuntu team, which is now ready to make some serious changes to the Linux distribution.
“Just to keep this list informed: Last week we made the necessary changes to add gnome-calendar to the desktop images. A few of us from the team considered the two solutions proposed here, and we preferred gnome-calendar. There are a few issues which we'll iron out over the rest of the cycle,” Ubuntu and Debian developer Iain Lane explained.
Canonical is also planning to ditch Brasero and Empathy from the default installation, and to replace Ubuntu Software Center with GNOME Software. As you can see, the addition of GNOME Calendar is just a small step.
