14 DAY TRIAL // Now that GNOME 3.18 is out and we've informed you guys about the new features it brings, the time has come to write more articles about the upcoming features of the next major release of the open-source desktop environment, GNOME 3.20.
We reported earlier that renowned GNOME developer Bastien Nocera published a very interesting article bragging about the work done by him alone or in collaboration with other developers on the recently released GNOME 3.18 desktop environment. In this article, we will talk a little about some of the upcoming features that the GNOME developers are preparing for the GNOME 3.20 desktop environment, and we will start with the implementation of ownCloud support in the GNOME Music application, which means that if you have access to an ownCloud server, you will be able to listen to the audio tracks stored on the respective server in GNOME's music player app.
"We've also been laying the groundwork in grilo for writing ever less code in C for plugin sources. Grilo Lua plugins can now use gnome-online-accounts to access keys for specific accounts, which we've used to re-implement the Pocket videos plugin, as well as the Last.fm cover art plugin. All those changes should allow implementing OwnCloud support in gnome-music in GNOME 3.20," says Bastien Nocera.
LibreOfficeKit support comes to GNOME Documents
Moreover, Bastien Nocera has revealed the fact that there will be support for LibreOfficeKit in the GNOME Documents application, which means that you will be able to interact with and edit LibreOffice documents directly from GNOME's Documents app, as well as support for EPub files in the GNOME Books app. Also, there will be a preview page displayed when opening video files.
The development cycle of the GNOME 3.20 has not started yet, but we should be able to get our hands on the first development build sometime in the coming months. The final version of the GNOME 3.20 desktop environment is expected next year, in April. Until then, the recently released GNOME 3.18 desktop environment will make its way into your favorite GNU/Linux distribution, and we will have more news about the upcoming features of GNOME 3.20.
