An App Store-like KDE software installer was implemented

openSUSE's Douglas DeMaio informs users of the openSUSE Tumbleweed rolling operating system about the latest updates pushed to the main repositories via snapshot builds.

Now that OpenSuSE Tumbleweed received the workers it needed to accelerate the delivery of snapshots to users, thus bringing all the latest software updates and GNU/Linux technologies as soon as they are released upstream, the time has come for Tumbleweed to receive new features.

One of these new features implemented recently through snapshots is a package called "discover," which openSUSE Tumbleweed users can now easily install using the default graphical or command-line package manager and get an App Store-like application that is in fact a KDE software installer.

"The 20160225 snapshot allows Tumbleweed users to add a package called 'discover', which is the KDE software installer, implemented as an app store like application," said Douglas DeMaio in the announcement. "KDE users can zypper install discover to get the app store based on AppStream."

GNOME 3.20 coming soon

Another interesting feature that landed recently in the openSUSE Tumbleweed software repositories is the implementation of an OpenLDAP-based ppolicy-check-module package that enforces password strength policies for the open-source operating system.

Among other updates, we can mention the latest Linux kernel 4.4 LTS, Mozilla Firefox 44.0, and Mozilla Thunderbird 38.6 updates, along with KDE Framework 5.19.0, TreeLine 2.0.2, Samba, and Wayland. The latest security patches and bugfixes are, as always, present, so you need to update as soon as possible.

With this occasion, we're informing GNOME fans that the openSUSE Tumbleweed operating system will be among the first to get the forthcoming GNOME 3.20 desktop environment, due for release on March 23, 2016. The latest GNOME 3.20 packages should hit the Tumbleweed repositories later this month or in early April.
