The GNOME developers are working around the clock to implement the most awesome GNU/Linux technologies in their highly acclaimed open-source desktop environment used in numerous Linux kernel-based operating systems by default.

They just released the first maintenance version of the GNOME 3.18 desktop environment last week, and now they've started work on the next major release, GNOME 3.20, and there's already a first milestone available for download for early adopters.

Javier Jardón had the pleasure of announcing the immediate availability for download of GNOME 3.19.1 on October 30, 2015, the first milestone in a six-month long development cycle of the GNOME 3.20 desktop environment, due for release on March 23, 2016, bringing updated applications and core components with many improvements and new features.

"The development of the next GNOME release, 3.20, has started, and the first development release, 3.19.1, is now available," said Javier Jardón Cabezas on behalf of the GNOME Release Team. "To compile GNOME 3.19.1, you can use the jhbuild modulesets (which use the exact tarball versions from the official release)."

The second GNOME 3.20 milestone arrives in a month

Every GNOME release has two official point releases after it is being unleashed in its final version, so for GNOME 3.18, the developers will prepare a second maintenance version, dubbed GNOME 3.18.2, in about two weeks from the moment of writing this article, on November 11, 2015, which will fix more of those annoying bugs reported by users since the previous point release.

After that, they will finally be able to concentrate their efforts on the development cycle for GNOME 3.20, which will get a second milestone, GNOME 3.19.2, at the end of November. Then, GNOME 3.19.3 and GNOME 3.19.4 will be released on December 16, 2015, and January 20, 2016, respectively, followed by the first Beta build on February 17, the second Beta version on March 2, and the Release Candidate (RC) on March 16, 2016.
